Lighting Designer: The Light Studio

Architect: John Beckmann

Interior Designer: Axis Mundi Design

General Contractor: Cardinal Construction

Our lighting design for this residence on Billionaire’s Row in New York City was conceived as a living composition, with light that evolves throughout the day to shape the mood of the home in subtle and dramatic ways. As morning gives way to afternoon and evening, carefully tuned scenes shift the atmosphere from bright and energizing to soft, intimate, and deeply calming, allowing each space to feel connected to the natural rhythm of the day. In the entrance gallery, a luminous onyx wall becomes a defining moment of arrival, its rich veining brought to life with a warm, layered glow that creates an immediate sense of wonder. The result is an environment that feels both artful and alive, where light does more than illuminate, it transforms.

Design Studio

An architect's or designer's office with two people working at desks and shelving filled with design samples, sketches, and materials, surrounded by large windows and warm lighting.

The Light Studio exists to guide you through the process of creating truly exceptional light in your home. Lighting has the power to shape how a space feels, how architecture is experienced, and how everyday moments unfold. Our team works alongside homeowners, architects, and interior designers to translate inspiration into a clear, thoughtful plan, then carry that vision through to completion with precision and care. From first concept to the final calibration of light, our role is simple: to help you achieve a lighting experience that feels natural, refined, and unmistakably extraordinary.

The studio is led by James Vermeulen, whose three decades of experience span theatre, fashion, and architectural environments, shaping a career that blends creative storytelling with technical discipline. A graduate of Purchase College, New York, where he earned a BFA in Design Technology, James approaches lighting as more than illumination, focusing on how light influences perception, movement, and emotion within a space. Throughout his career, he has collaborated closely with architects, interior designers, and builders to carry design intent through the details, creating lighting that feels natural, purposeful, and fully integrated with the architecture.
